Interesting things I've seen so far...

Culture shock is something we heard a lot about during deputation.  I think that we will experience far more "culture shock" in Togo.  However, there are certainly some interesting things that we have seen and are learning to live with that are different.  I will try to post more in the coming weeks, but here are a few:

Who knew that peanut butter is not loved by people all over the world?  I thought everyone loved peanut butter (unless allergic of course) But, here in Paris and Massy, peanut butter is hard to find!  Instead they eat Nutella.  You can buy in the USA.  It is a chocolaty nutty blend that is creamy and yummy, but it is not a replacement for Peanut butter!  This is taking some adjusting.

When entering a small restaurant/ cafe you must know what you plan to eat, or not eat.  If you plan to have a meal then feel free to enjoy a table that has napkins and silverware.  However, if you plan to just enjoy a cup of coffee and perhaps a pasty then you are to find a table that is void of any utensils or napkins.  Apparently these are only for those who come for the food.  If you think you deserve a table with napkins when only having coffee, you can expect the server to give you some dirty looks!

  1. Interesting about the tables and silverware :) I don't remember dealing with that when we were on our trip but maybe we just didn't notice the dirty looks :) Lol, wouldn't surprise me. Nutella is good in certain recipes but I agree, not as PB! Hope you find some!!
